How can I help?

I offer a warm and supportive space to explore whatever is on your mind and help you make sense of your relationships with yourself, others and the world. I'm here to make you feel seen, heard and understood- even the parts that may normally be 'hidden'.

Emotions are signals for our inner needs and desires. I'm here to help you feel safe in your skin to be able to sit with them, and understand the narratives they're telling you. In time, therapy will help grow your self-awareness, helping you move from old patterns and opening space for a life that feels more balanced, meaningful and true to you.

Walk and Talk Therapy

"Taking traditional talking therapy into the outdoors"

I also offer Walk and Talk therapy in the Worthing area - this can be a great option for those who enjoy the outdoors or feel connected to nature. It may be helpful for those who may not like the potential intensity felt in face-to-face conversation.

During walk and talk therapy, we'll move side-by-side, most likely at a gentle and mindful pace. We can walk in nature or a more urban environment- whatever you'd prefer. At times, we may also find ourselves sitting down, and if it feels right, nature may find its way into our conversations.

Talking therapy outside:

  • Can make it easier to talk
  • Can enhance thinking and processing
  • Offers a natural grounding
  • Can reduce cortisol in the body
  • May reduce the potential intensity/ discomfort of eye contact or potential intimacy felt in traditional sessions
  • The rhythmic movement of walking also stimulates both sides of the brain (bilateral stimulation) - helping to regulate the nervous system and encourage the processing of difficult emotions

Rewind Technique

Rewind Technique is an internationally recognised approach used for helping people process and work through traumatic memories. It is sometimes known as a visual-kinaesthetic dissociation technique. It is a brief, gentle therapeutic technique used for PTSD, as well as phobias, OCD and anxiety.

Benefits of Rewind Technique:
  • No disclosure necessary - you don't need to talk about what happened to you
  • Low risk of re-traumatisation - you stay at a safe emotional distance throughout
  • Fast - often, only a few are sessions needed
The Technique

It works by being in a deeply relaxed state, establishing a 'safe place' and using guided imagery to visualise your traumatic experience from a psychologically safe distance, before rapidly 'rewinding' your traumatic experience and returning to your safe starting place. This process is repeated several times, to ensure all parts of your trauma experience are included.

How It Can Help

Rewind can help 're-file' memories without the original alarm response attached. When you recall a memory, it briefly becomes 'unlocked' before being stored again - a process called reconsolidation. Recalling the memory in a deeply relaxed and safe state (rather than the original threatened state), combined with the repetition involved in Rewind, helps the brain recognise the memory as something that happened in the past, rather than seeing it as current and ongoing danger or threat.

The facts of what happened stay the same, but the brain's threat system is no longer as alarmed. Voluntary recall of the memory remains intact, whilst the intensity of emotional and physical reactions typically reduces, and involuntary recall reduces or may even stop.

Sessions Needed

For single-event trauma, only 1-3 sessions may be needed, while more complex or repeated trauma may need a session per event- but it is dependent on how your involuntary recall occurs.

Rewind can be offered as a standalone therapy, though some people may prefer to book a couple of regular counselling sessions to build rapport first. Where it may be beneficial, I can also integrate Rewind Technique into sessions with existing therapy clients.

Creativity

When words feel too much, are hard to find or simply, if it feels right, I may invite you to a creative exercise. This could look like drawing (no experience necessary!), writing, collaging, dreamwork, working with visualisations, using nesting dolls or a sand tray (even online!).

This can be really helpful for those who process things very visually, or for those who struggle to identify or express their emotions through traditional talking therapy. I will always follow your lead as to whether you feel this is something you'd like to try.

Mind-Body Connection

Through my own experience holding psychological distress and trauma in my body, I particularly understand how our bodies can hold onto things that our mind might find difficult. I hope to help you connect your mind and body and help bring you more wholeness and calmness again
